Admissions

Admission preferences and prerequisites for the Public Health Medicine program leading to dual Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health  (M.D./M.P.H.) degrees:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited medical school.
  • Candidates may enter the program after the first year of medical school but no later than after the fourth year.
  • Students are admitted into the program beginning the May/Summer session only.

Application Process

Applicants must submit to the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS):

  • Completed SOPHAS application and application fee, designating the U of MN School of Public Health;
  • Statement of Purpose and Objectives describing their academic, volunteer and work experience, career goals, and type of setting in which they plan to work;
  • Resume or C.V.;
  • Official transcripts of record from each college/university attended;
  • Three (3) completed Recommendation Forms with attached letters of recommendation from persons qualified to assess the applicant's academic work; clinical, public health or professional experiences; or leadership potential in public health*;
  • MCAT scores**;
  • TOEFL test scores (international applicants only)

*If allowed by your medical school, you may request that two letters of recommendation be sent directly to the Public Health Practice Major (address below).  We will then send them directly to SOPHAS. The third letter must be current and speak specifically to your interest and capability in public health.
**MCAT scores may be sent directly to us from your medical school.  Please submit an Authorization for Release of Information to your medical school.
