Grade Point Average

Cumulative GPA

Students must achieve a grade point average of no less than 3.0 (B) across their entire program to receive an M.P.H. degree.

Grading of Public Health Core Courses

Students must take all public health core courses for a letter grade (A-F). Students will be required to achieve a B- grade or better in each course taken on an A-F basis. Students may retake core courses at their own expense until they achieve a grade of B- or better. However, a retaken course may be counted only once toward degree requirements in the student’s study plan. Students should contact the faculty who taught the course for guidance on retaking the course

S/N Grade Option

M.P.H. students may take no more than 20% of their coursework on an S/N (satisfactory/non-satisfactory) grading basis, exclusive of those topics, seminars, and field experience courses offered only on an S/N basis.

Registration Requirement

If you do not register in the School of Public for one full year (12 months) then you will be discontinued in the registration system. Please contact the Major Coordinator to be re-activated in the registration system.

Immunization Requirements

According to OSHA regulations, CDC guidelines, and University of Minnesota policy, Academic Health Center (AHC) students are required to have a health clearance as a condition of enrollment.

All immunizations must be complete and in compliance by your second term of registration.

More details and the downloadable Student Immunization Record form are available from Boynton Health Service.

Student Health Benefit Plan

All Academic Health Center students will be automatically enrolled in the University Sponsored Health Benefit Plan (SHBP). This plan provides easy, affordable coverage for the unique needs of AHC students. You can have the plan waived, if you are eligible. For more information, please go to the Boynton Health Services website or contact Boynton Health Service at 612.624.0627 or studins@bhs.umn.edu.

Program Completion Timeline

The maximum time allowed by the School of Public Health for completion of an MPH degree is seven (7) years. The seven-year period begins with the first term of enrollment after admission to the program.

Transfer of Credits

A student may transfer up to 14 semester credits (or 1/3 of their MPH program) of graduate or professional credits taken at the University of Minnesota or at another college or university. Transfer credits may satisfy the public health basic curriculum or focus curriculum. Credits are eligible for transfer if:

  • No credits older than five years from the date of the student’s matriculation will be accepted for transfer;
  • A grade of “B” or better is required for each course requested for transfer credit, unless the institution uses only satisfactory and non-satisfactory, then a satisfactory grade is required; and
  • All courses must be taken at graduate level and taken at an accredited graduate institution to be transferable.

Students seeking to transfer credits must complete a petition form and submit it to the Major Coordinator.

Probation

Students are expected to advance steadily towards graduation. Student’s records are reviewed at the end of each semester to determine whether satisfactory progress is being made towards their degree.

The Major Coordinator will provide written notification by the middle of each term to students whose cumulative GPA is less than 3.0 at the end of the preceding semester term (excluding incompletes) that they are on probation and that they must maintain a minimum term GPA of 3.0 for each subsequent term. Students must achieve letter grades (incompletes are unacceptable while on probationary status). This written notice must inform the student that the GPA must be raised to a minimum of 3.0 to be removed from probationary status and to be awarded a degree.

Once the student’s cumulative GPA is raised to a 3.0 or higher, he or she will be taken off probation.

Students on probationary status who do not receive at least a 3.0 term GPA for each subsequent term will be dismissed from the program. Students who have been dismissed and are interested in reapplication to the School are allowed to do so 12 months after the original admission term and year. The dismissal becomes part of the reapplication and is considered in any admission decision. Note that any courses taken for graduate credit during this 12-month period cannot be transferred in to a program should the student be readmitted.

For more information, please contact your Major Coordinator.
