The SPH's Health Disparities Working Group (HDWG) formed in spring 2005 to:
- Provide greater visibility to health disparities research in the School
- Strengthen collaborative efforts
- Create long lasting partnerships between SPH faculty and community-based organizations engaged in health disparities research
- Ensure health disparities issues are better integrated in course curricula
SPH faculty are engaged in a wide range of research including:
- Disparities in cancer care
- Disparities in the experiences of caregivers of cancer patients
- Access to health care, health insurance coverage and use of services among minority, immigrant, young and low-income populations
- Childhood obesity among lower income and minority groups
- Alcohol and tobacco use in minority populations
- Cardiovascular disease risk factors in Hispanic, African American, and non-Hispanics
- Differences in geographically referenced data confounded by race and socioeconomic status
The working group includes faculty and staff throughout the SPH and other University departments concerned with reducing health disparities. HDWG members meet on campus throughout the academic year.
