Diabetes takes a disproportionate toll on Native Americans. They are, on average, 2.2 times more likely to have the disease than non-Hispanic whites. “Culturally competent public health approaches are needed to combat the problem,” said Monte Fox.

“Public health is at a crossroads,” said Lonnie King, dean of Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “The increasing convergence of human and animal health is creating complex new challenges. We need to engage a more diverse group of partners to find solutions.”
