Research Overview
The University of Minnesota is pleased to be leading the research effort that we hope will lead to a greater understanding of taconite worker health issues. We envision this effort being a collaborative one involving numerous community partners. We look forward to receiving input from representatives of organizations interested in the health of Minnesota's Iron Range taconite workers at a meeting on August 8, 2007, in Eveleth, Minnesota.
The University of Minnesota's primary research arms for this project are the School of Public Health, which will look at the health of the workers, and the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) which will examine samples of dust and iron ore in mines and particulate matter throughout the Iron Range.
Here is an overview of the research we envision:
- Develop and recommend strategies to minimize worker exposure to taconite dust;
- Offer advice to individuals who have symptoms of, or have been diagnosed with lung disease regarding what they can and should do to protect their health;
- Analyze dust and iron ore samples from mines and plants throughout the Iron Range to determine the level of harmful particles present;
- Analyze data collected on particulate matter in the environment of communities throughout the Iron Range;
- Learn what we can about the 58 deaths attributed to mesothelioma;
- Review death certificates of mine workers;
- Conduct a respiratory health assessment of active and retired miners.
The scope of this research could change based on partner input, funding, and related issues.
