Applying to our school

You may apply online via SOPHAS to our MPH, MHA, MS, PhD and Certificate in Core Concepts programs. SOPHAS is the centralized Schools of Public Health Application Service.

Remember to designate the University of Minnesota School of Public Health as one of your school choices along with your desired program.

We'll let you know by e-mail once we receive your application from SOPHAS.

Application Deadlines

Requirements for Admission to Full Time MHA Program

Applicants should have a strong commitment to managing people and resources to create and sustain outstanding healthcare services and organizations. Strong quantitative and communication skills are essential. Prior experience in healthcare is not required in the full-time program; however, the MHA program does give consideration to applicants with health care or relevent professional work experience, superior credentials, and demonstrated leadership potential.

  • bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • minimum GPA of 3.0
  • GRE minimum of 300 (post-August 2011) or 1000 (pre-August 2011)
  • GMAT minimum of 500 with minimum analytical writing assessment of 3.5 on either exam
  • MCAT accepted from U.S. trained physicians
  • letter of intent
  • resume
  • transcripts
  • three letters of recommendation
  • on-site panel interview (telephone interview for international applications)

International Applicants

In addition to the above requirements, international applicants must also submit

  • 100 on the Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL test, or
  • 600 on the paper TOEFL test, or
  • 7.0 (total band score) on the IELTS test

Preparation

To prepare for the Program’s rigorous curriculum, the faculty highly recommends the following coursework prior to matriculation:

  • Statistics
  • Accounting
  • Microeconomics
  • Finance

Application Information/Deadlines Specific to the MHA

The application deadline for the Full time MHA program is April 15. Applicants are encouraged to apply early based on the limited spaces in the program.

Students who apply to the MHA program are required to complete an interview with members of the MHA Admissions Committee. Students can expect to hear from the program shortly after the Admissions Committee meets.

The MHA Admissions Committee is very interested in reaching a timely decision on your admission and continuously reviews application files. When the decision is positive, you are recommended for admission to the Dean for final approval. When the Dean has given his approval you will receive a letter from him congratulating you on being admitted to the MHA Major. You will also receive a letter of congratulation from the MHA Chair. When the admissions decision is negative, you will receive a letter from the Associate Program Director informing you of this decision.
