3M Internship Opportunity for Industrial Hygiene Students
![]()
3M Company has established a paid internship program for industrial hygiene students, which will involve up to 899 hours of work conducting exposure assessments and similar activities at a variety of 3M locations. The actual number of hours and types of activities involved will depend on the needs of the 3M division or department in which the student is placed, as well as the student’s availability. The pay rate will depend on the student’s completed IH-program coursework and any relevant past experience with 3M.
Students may use these internship experiences to fulfill their PUBH 7196 Field Experience requirements. Consultation with and approval from an academic advisor are required prior to using an internship appointment for the field experience requirement.
In some cases, it may be possible to complete the requirements for a masters project (PUBH 7194); this requires additional approval from an academic advisor (and research advisor, if different), completion of additional forms, and a letter from the 3M supervisor indicating their support for and understanding of the industrial hygiene program’s expectations for a research project. Approvals and all relevant documentations must be completed prior to accepting and starting the internship.
Students who have completed at least their first semester of coursework, which should include PUBH 6170 (Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety), PUBH 6103 (Exposure to Environmental Hazards), PUBH 6104 (Environmental Health Effects: Introduction to Toxicology), will be considered eligible for the 3M Internship Program.
Internships will typically start in January on a part-time basis (usually around 20 hr per week) and continue through the summer on a full-time basis (40 hr per week). It may be possible to arrange a different schedule, depending on 3M needs and student availability.
All available 3M intern positions will be posted at 3M.com. You will be asked to include information about your undergraduate and graduate grade point average (GPA). In general, internship positions will expect a minimum GPA of 3.0, but a higher GPA may be required for some positions.
Students should submit a cover letter or email with contact information and an up-to-date resume to Scott Wright, 3M Lab Safety Department Sr. Supervisor (sswright2@mmm.com), by November 30. Interviews will normally be conducted during December.
