Undergraduate Minor in Public Health

The new Public Health Minor is a collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Health. This minor is ideal for undergraduate students interested in Public Health issues which can be explored through courses spanning the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Health curriculum spectrum.

Protecting the public’s health requires addressing challenges that are influenced as much by individual behavior, social behavior, and the particulars of culture and history as they are by biology, chemistry, and physics. Indeed, understanding things like biology, the environment, social and political-economic systems, and technology as well as the methods necessary to study public health will equip students to protect the health and well-being of the population. To better understand public health, College of Liberal Arts students and students from other colleges are invited and encouraged to enroll in the Undergraduate Minor in Public Health as a complement to their major degree programs. The program includes coursework from both the School of Public Health and the College of Liberal Arts.

This innovative minor — offering a broad training in approaches to and understandings of public health — is designed to give students a foundation in the language, concepts, and methods used when addressing population-level health challenges. The minor can serve as a foundation for further study in public health, in other health professions, or in any field in which the health of persons and populations is a relevant concern. Public Health Minor courses also contribute to a comprehensive liberal arts education.

The new Public Health Minor is being administered through the advising offices of both the Department of Sociology and the Department of Geography.
