Applying to our school

You may apply online via SOPHAS to our MPH, MHA, MS, PhD and Certificate in Core Concepts programs. SOPHAS is the centralized Schools of Public Health Application Service.

Remember to designate the University of Minnesota School of Public Health as one of your school choices along with your desired program.

We'll let you know by e-mail once we receive your application from SOPHAS.

Application Deadlines

Applicants to the Public Health Administration and Policy program should have a strong commitment to formulating policies or assuming organizational leadership with the goal of preventing disease and promoting health across populations.

Applicants should have some work experience in public health, such as serving as a volunteer, completing an internship, or full-time employment in a public health setting.

Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis, beginning in December. Complete applications are forwarded to the coordinator who convenes the PHAP admissions committee to review the applications. Please allow 5-6 weeks for the admissions review process. Applicants will be notified by mail of the admission decision.

To be considered for scholarships, the priority deadline is Dec. 1. However, applications will be accepted until April 15 or when the class is filled, whichever comes first.

Admission Prerequisites and Preferences

The prerequisites/preferences noted below are the minimum required for application to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Note that standardized test scores and GPAs listed are preferred minimum performance levels and provide competitive points of reference for admission, but are not alone decisive in the admissions review.

Previous Post-Secondary Study – All applicants need to provide evidence of past academic performance achieved at a properly accredited institution of higher education in the form of an official transcript of a U.S. baccalaureate degree (or foreign equivalent); OR official transcript of a post-baccalaureate graduate or professional degree. Admission to certain programs requires a prior advanced degree in a related area.

GRE Test Scores – a combination of 1000 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the test and a score of 3.5 on the analytical writing assessment. Some programs may have higher preferred minimums. Note: Public Health Administration and Policy also accepts LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, and DAT scores, as well as completed ECFMG certification.

Grade Point Average – a GPA of 3.0. Some programs may have a higher preferred minimum.
