This Application for Admission information is for applicants to the following Regent’s Certificate programs only:

Note: Applications to the Regents Certificate in Public Health Core Concepts apply through SOPHAS.

Application Process

The application form, application fee, and supporting documents should be mailed (faxed copies are not accepted) to:

The following materials are required to complete the application for admission.

Application for Admission Form

Application Fee

An application fee of $75.00 must accompany each application for admission. The application fee cannot be deferred and is not refundable. It should be sent in the form of a personal check or money order made payable to the University of Minnesota. International applicants should submit the fee in the form of a bank draft drawn on a U.S. bank, made payable (in U.S. dollars) to the University of Minnesota. Credit card or cash payments are not accepted.

Supporting Documents

The following supporting documents are required to complete the application for admission. Please have all documents sent directly to our office at the address noted above.

1. Statement of Purpose and Objectives
Provide an essay describing your past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. You are encouraged to comment on any or all of the following: plans you have to use your education and training; the needs and/or challenges you perceive as important in your field of study; and any personal qualities, characteristics, and skills you believe will enable you to be successful in your chosen field of study.

2. Résumé or C.V.

3. Letter of Recommendation
Provide one letter of recommendation from a person qualified to assess your academic work; clinical, public health, or professional experiences; or leadership potential in public health.

4. Official GRE scores – Clinical Research Certificate applicants only
Applicants to the Certificate in Clinical Research who do not hold an advanced health degree must provide official GRE scores. An official report of the GRE scores should be sent to the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis/St. Paul, institution code 6874.

5. Official Transcripts – U.S. Institutions
Provide a separate official transcript from every U.S. college/university attended in which you earned a degree. Transcripts are considered official only if they arrive in our office in a sealed envelope from the college or university.

6. Official Academic Credentials – International Institutions (if applicable)
Applicants who have attended international institutions should provide an official course-by-course credential evaluation by World Educational Services (WES). Have WES send the evaluation directly to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

Note:U.S. applicants, who have studied abroad as part of their coursework at a U.S. university/college, do not need to provide an evaluation of their coursework taken abroad as long as the international coursework and grades are noted on their U.S. university/college transcript.

7. Proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable)
Applicants, whose native language is not English, are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An official report of the TOEFL scores should be sent to the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis/St. Paul, institution code 6874. An official report of the IELTS scores should be sent to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

The preferred performance level for admission to the School of Public Health is a TOEFL score of 600 on the paper test or 100 on the internet based test (iBT). Additionally, the preferred minimum on the IELTS is 7.0 (total band score). Scores must be under two years old.

If you have completed 16-semester credits/ 24-quarter credits (within the past 24 months) in an academic program in a recognized institution of higher learning in the U.S., you do not need to submit the TOEFL as part of the application process.

Admission Prerequisites and Preferences

Our students come from all academic areas: biology, English, social work, chemistry, art, business, statistics, history, psychology, etc. Some degrees may be preferred for specific majors. Some majors require work/volunteer experience and/or course prerequisites.

The prerequisites/preferences noted below are the minimum required for application to our School. Note that GRE test scores and GPAs listed are preferred minimum performance levels and provide competitive points of reference for admission, but are not alone decisive in the admissions review.

Previous Post-Secondary Study

All applicants need to provide evidence of a U.S. baccalaureate degree (or foreign equivalent) at a properly accredited institution of higher education; OR of a post-baccalaureate graduate or professional degree at a properly accredited institution of higher education.

Admission to certain programs requires a prior advanced degree in a related area. 

Note: No applicant will be permitted to matriculate who has not completed a baccalaureate degree from a properly accredited university or college. There are no exceptions to this rule.

GRE Test Scores

Pre-August 2011 test - A combination of 1000 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the test and a score of 3.5 on the analytical writing assessment.

Post August 2011 test - A combination of 300 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the test and a score of 3.5 on the analytical writing assessment.

Some programs may have higher preferred minimum scores. Check specific programs for details.

Grade Point Average

A GPA of 3.0.

Some programs may have a higher preferred minimum GPA. Check with specific programs for details.

English Language Proficiency

Evidence of proficiency in English is required of applicants whose native language is not English or whose education was completed exclusively at an institution(s) whose language of instruction is not in English.

Evidence of proficiency can be met by providing proof of one of the following:

  • Official TOEFL scores – The operational standard for admission to the School of Public Health is a TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based (iBT) test OR 600 on the paper test. TOEFL scores must be under two years old.
  • Official IELTS scores – The operational standard for admission to the School of Public Health is an IELTS score of 7.0. IELTS scores must be under two years old.
  • Completion of 16-semester credits/ 24-quarter credits (within the past 24 months) in an academic program at a recognized institution of higher learning in the U.S.
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate

If you do not designate a second party, the School of Public Health will not discuss your application with anyone other than those specified below.

All information on the Application for Admission Form is private. The University of Minnesota complies with federal and state privacy laws and regulations. Those who may gain access to information in your file are staff and faculty at the University who have a need to gain access, and outside organizations and government bodies in limited circumstances as authorized by state or federal law. In addition, you may review your own file. No one else may review your file without your written consent or a subpoena or court order.

Required items on the Application for Admission Form are used for identification and/or admissions purposes. Information on the Application for Admission Form may also be used for decisions on awarding assistantships, scholarships, and/or other financial support opportunities.

Gender and ethnicity information is needed for reporting and research purposes. All individual student information will be treated as confidential; it will not be used in a discriminatory manner. The information collected will be used for summary reports required by federal and state laws and regulations and by the University of Minnesota. Refusal to provide any of the requested information will not adversely affect the processing of your application.
