About ICGC Fellowships
ICGC offers fellowships providing financial support for graduate students at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.
Nominees should have backgrounds and interests which identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change. We encourage nomination of exceptionally capable students especially but not only from the global south and U.S. communities of color.
SPH Students are Eligible
Prospective School of Public Health (SPH) students are eligible to be nominated for two different types of ICGC Fellowship: The Scholar and Mellon Fellowships. Both are extremely competitive, and SPH only supports one ICGC Fellow each academic year.
All students applying to School of Public Health degree programs (i.e., MPH, MS, and PhD programs) are eligible, regardless of degree sought. Students must be admitted and matriculate to a degree seeking program in the School of Public Health in order to be eligible.
Two ICGC Fellowships
1. Scholar-
Applicants should have backgrounds and interests which identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change.
2. Mellon-
The ICGC-Mellon Scholar Fellowships are a collaborative program of ICGC and the Center for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the University of Minnesota. ICGC-Mellon Scholar Fellowships support graduate students whose research interests emphasize humanistic and interpretive social science perspectives. Additionally, nominees are expected to conduct their dissertation research in southern Africa.
Awards
Awards vary in amount and duration, up to $20,000 in the first year of study. Transportation costs to Minnesota are not covered. The student’s home department is expected to guarantee support in the form of 50 percent teaching or research assistantships in the second and third year of study, and tuition and health insurance benefits for four years. Upon successful completion of all coursework and of oral and written doctoral qualifying examinations, ICGC will provide a minimum of $10,000 in dissertation research year support.
Departmental Nomination
In order to be considered for any ICGC Fellowship, students must submit both a Request for Departmental Nomination, and a Notice of Interest form to ICGC.
The deadline for the Request for Departmental Nomination to the School of Public Health is midnight CST, Friday, Jan. 20, 2012.
