U Card Information for New Students

Get Your U Card!

The University’s all-purpose card!
The U Card is your University of Minnesota Student ID card. Use your U Card to access University buildings, the Student SPHere, as your University Library card, to charge books to your Student Account at the University Bookstore and more! To receive your first U Card, present an approved primary form of a government issued photo ID (i.e. Driver’s license, passport) at the U Card office. Please visit ucard.umn.edu for more information.

Upload a Photo for your U Card!
Go online to upload a photo of your choice for your U Card. You can then pick up your U Card whenever you arrive on campus, even if it is later into the academic year.

Get your Preferred Name on your U Card
If you would like to have your preferred name printed on your U Card you will need to log into your MyU portal.  Once in, click “My Info”, then click the edit pencil by your name. You can then click “Add A New Name”, select “Preferred Name” and then fill in your preferred name. You will need to update your preferred name 24 hours prior to uploading your U Card photo.

Students also have the option to load money onto your U Card. Loading money into your Gopher GOLD account will allow you to make purchases all over campus using your U Card. The Gopher GOLDTM Account is not a bank card, just a stored value account. Gopher GOLD is the only way to pay for printing on campus. Please visit gophergold.umn.edu for more information.
