We are thrilled to share a new visiting professor series inspired by a generous gift from David Fine, PhD, MHA ‘74, and his wife Susan Fine. The 2023 visiting professor and keynote speaker is Robert Huckman, PhD, Albert J. Weatherhead III Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. This inaugural lecture series brings a nationally recognized senior academic professional and thought leader to campus each academic year to offer a public lecture and to meet with students, faculty, alumni, and the broader University community. The event is hosted by the School of Public Health and the Master of Healthcare Administration program.

Despite the increased formation of healthcare systems over the past half century, the delivery of healthcare has become increasingly decentralized. Drawing on both large-sample research and case examples, this lecture considers how relationships between patients, existing providers, and new entrants can be structured—and restructured—to move toward greater care integration.

David Fine

Dr. David J. Fine (MHA 1974) enjoyed a 40 year career as a practitioner-educator in the manner of James A. Hamilton, founder of the Minnesota MHA Program. With respect to practice, his experience included roles as CEO of university hospitals, multi-hospital systems, medical groups and managed care organizations. For most of his career, Fine held concurrent university teaching and research appointments. These included tenured full professorships at Baylor College of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham  and University of Cincinnati. He chaired the Health Systems Management Department of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine for nine years and was honored with an endowed Regents Professorship. Fine is author or co-author of three textbooks, 14 book chapters, 50 refereed articles and other scholarly writings. His service to the field of healthcare management education included chairmanships of the Association of University Programs in Healthcare Administration and the Accrediting Commission on Education in Healthcare Administration (now CAHME.)

 

Robert S. Huckman, PhD

Dr. Robert Huckman

Robert Huckman is the Albert J. Weatherhead III Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, the Howard Cox Faculty Chair of the HBS Healthcare Initiative, and the Unit Head for Technology and Operations Management. He currently teaches the required MBA course, Technology and Operations Management, and has previously taught several elective MBA courses, including Transforming Health Care Delivery and Operations Strategy. Professor Huckman is the Faculty Chair of HBS’ executive education program entitled Managing Health Care Delivery.  He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Co-Chair of the management track of Harvard’s doctoral program in health policy.

Professor Huckman’s research focuses on the linkages between organizational characteristics and operating performance, with an emphasis on the health care industry. He is an associate editor of Management Science and has published articles in journals including the American Economic ReviewHarvard Business Review, Health Affairs, the Journal of the American Medical AssociationManagement Science, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Professor Huckman also serves as a Trustee of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization and Brigham Health as well as an advisory board member for several private companies in the health care industry.

Professor Huckman received a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and an A.B. in Public Policy, summa cum laude, from Princeton University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Prior to his graduate studies, Professor Huckman was a Principal and Founding Equity Member of Stamos Associates, Inc., a strategy and operations consulting firm serving clients in the health care industry. In 1997, Stamos Associates was acquired by Perot Systems, Inc. Professor Huckman has also worked at Booz Allen & Hamilton, Inc.

An adjacent 500-car ramp is connected by tunnel to the McNamara Alumni Center. Parking is $3.00 per hour with a daily maximum of $13.00. If the ramp is in event mode there will instead be a daily rate of $10.00, and no hourly rate. Once inside the parking ramp, take the East elevator to tunnel B or street level. The Alumni Center is the copper building adjacent to the ramp.

From the north, heading south on 35W

  1. Take Exit #18, 4th St-University Ave exit
  2. Cross 4th Street SE; turn left on University Ave
  3. Stay in the right lane, drive 9 blocks to the University Ave Parking Ramp — located on the right side of the street

From the south, heading north on 35W

  1. Take Exit #18, 4th St-University Ave exit
  2. Turn right on University Ave
  3. Stay in the right lane, drive 9 blocks to the University Ave Parking Ramp — located on the right side of the street

From the east or west on I-94

  1. Take Exit #235B, University of Minnesota/Huron Boulevard
  2. Follow Huron Boulevard one block and turn left onto Fulton St (1st stop light)
  3. Drive 3 blocks and turn right onto Oak St
  4. Follow Oak St past the Alumni Center (on the left) and cross over University Ave.
  5. Oak St will curve to the left and turn into 4th Street
  6. Turn left at the first available street (18th Ave, 17th Ave or 16th Ave)
  7. Drive 1 block and turn left onto University Ave
  8. Immediately get into the right lane and turn right into the University Ave Parking Ramp

Metro Transit- Green Line:

The event qualifies for 1.5 ACHE Qualified Education Credits

As an independent chartered chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, ACHE
Minnesota is authorized to award a total of 1.5 hours of ACHE Qualified Education credits
toward advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Participants in this program who wish to have it considered for ACHE Qualified Education credit
should list their attendance when they apply to the American College of Healthcare Executives
for advancement or recertification.
