LGBTQ+ older adults experience health disparities distinct from their cisgender, heterosexual peers. Understanding how this population interacts with care settings is critically important in the health research and practice community. The HPM Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) Committee invites you to join us for an informal, journal club-style discussion on this topic. Participants will learn from experts about the unique challenges and needs of sexual and gender minority (SGM) older adults and how this plays out in long-term care settings, before exploring this topic further in small groups.

To guide our time in small-group discussions, attendees should plan to have read the following article, recently published in The Gerontologist: “Prevalence of sexual and gender minority (SGM) affirmative policies in long-term care facilities in Minnesota.” Lead authors (HPM’s Prof. Tetyana Shippee and EpiCH’s Prof. Simon Rosser) will share their experiences doing this important work.
