A team of students from the University of Minnesota MHA program took first in The Ohio State University Healthcare Case Competition, April 1, 2016.

Tyne Alexander, Callie Heyne and Joseph White faced 13 teams from 9 CAHME-accredited health administration programs to take the winning title. Teams presented strategies to improve the financial performance of obstetrics services within an organization while meeting the needs of the community.

The Minnesota team recommended a time-phased approach focused on development of efficiency and value, then reinvestment of resources into an expansion of services that provide more comprehensive, well-coordinated care for women—especially mothers in all stages of pregnancy.

Their solution offered increased value and expansion that positioned the organization to negotiate value-based reimbursement, and growth through partnerships with academic medical centers and local businesses.

Justine Mishek ’02, senior lecturer, served as the team’s faculty advisor, and many alumni provided coaching and feedback to the team.

Earlier this year, Minnesota placed first in the UAB Health Administration Case Competition.
