The Potential of Pharmacy-based Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare: Informing Policy and Practice in California (and beyond)

Increasing access to sexual and reproductive health services among racial, sexual and gender diverse youth in the U.S. demands novel and innovative strategies. Dr. Raiza Beltran will present findings from the CA Pharmacists Study, along with other work, that examined the implementation of recently enacted California state policies expanding pharmacists’ scope of practice to independently prescribe HIV prevention medication (i.e., PrEP and PEP) and contraception (i.e., oral and emergency contraception), including the potential of pharmacists to prescribe medication abortion. Leading multi-site collaboratives, Dr. Beltran’s work includes engagement of researchers from across University of California campuses, state-wide professional pharmacists’ associations, and local community-based organizations.
