Military service was a common experience of many men in the twentieth century. Although we know this experience must have affected men in later life, it was not until after World War II that social scientists began to study the impact of military service late in men’s lives. The impact of the two world wars on aging and later-life health is not well understood. In this presentation I give an overview of how I use military records from New Zealand and the United States, and different methods of identifying wartime experiences to better understand how military service affected men late in their lives.
