The Division of Environmental Health Sciences is pleased to welcome our new faculty member, Marizen R. Ramirez, PhD.
By the time children reach adulthood, about half will have experienced a traumatic event. Trauma, which includes the physical and psychological wounds from injuries and violence, can deeply scar children and impact their well-being. Dr. Ramirez is passionate about studying trauma in children as well as other vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities, agricultural workers, and rural residents, to understand risk factors and identify effective prevention strategies. Some of her exciting multidisciplinary research studies include: evaluating anti-bullying policies across the country; understanding the communications of and social networks in which cyberbullying occurs; testing interventions to support the psychosocial recovery of children impacted by trauma; and evaluating disaster preparedness intervention for rural households of children with disabilities and older adults.
Dr. Ramirez holds a degree in Epidemiology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and her scholarship has been funded by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute of Justice, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. Dr. Ramirez brings exceptional expertise to the Division of Environmental Health Sciences that will extend our legacy of cutting edge research and education in injury and violence prevention and control.
