Unraveling the Blanket for Liberation: The Abolitionist Cause for Public Health
Tuesday, April 23 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm CDT
Tuesday, April 23 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm CDT
Public health has an imperative to protect us and a constitutional obligation to do no harm. In pursuit if this imperative, it often works hand-in-hand with police and exercises policing power to carry out its directives. But policing, the foundation of mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex, has done significant harm to communities, primarily communities of color. This talk interrogates the relationship between public health and policing and presents a case for abolition as a public health cause that is necessary to protect communities and achieve health equity.
