Support Through Crisis

For more than six weeks, we have listened and watched with horror as a public health crisis has unfolded in the Middle East. The atrocities of the conflict have left millions without access to healthcare, clean water, food, housing, electricity, and other basic necessities. The fear and reality of violence, death, and loss is overwhelming and will no doubt have a reverberating effect on the mental health of the populations affected for years to come. This human suffering and loss of life undermines the core tenets of public health.

Our community continues to be impacted, in various ways, by this situation. In addition, the conflict has brought about anxiety and division in the U.S. that has left many of our colleagues, friends, and family feeling unsafe.

Recently, we have received requests from School of Public Health (SPH) students for more support and opportunities to engage in community conversation. To address these requests, we have developed a resource for faculty and instructors to support students through this complex situation. In addition, the SPH Student Senate is conducting a survey to better understand the ongoing needs of our students.

As you continue to navigate your own personal experiences amidst this and other ongoing crises, take time to check in with yourself on how you are feeling and what you may need to feel safe and supported. Here are some University resources to consider:

I hope you find time for rest, connection, and peace during this week’s holiday break.

Warmly,

Tim Beebe
