SPH in Color: A reception for our American Indian, BIPOC and International community

Please join us for this reception celebrating our American Indian, BIPOC, and international community! This event will be a space for the SPH students, staff, faculty, and alumni to make connections, be in community, and have fun. The event will include a panel discussion with local public health BIPOC leaders. Food and beverages will be provided.

Program:
5-6 p.m. Registration opens, food, private gallery viewing, and networking
6-6:45 p.m. Panel discussion featuring local public health leaders
6:45-7:30 p.m. Networking
7:30 p.m. Event ends

While this event is open to all, regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin, it will center the experiences of Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), American Indian, and international students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Imee Cambronero serves as Chief of Staff for the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), where she helps advance the Commissioner’s priorities and oversees key functions, including communications, legislative relations, data and analytics, and IT. In this role, she works to align strategy across the agency, ensuring that policy, public engagement, and data-driven decision-making support the department’s mission to protect and improve public health.

Prior to joining MDH, Imee led 3M’s international giving efforts and chaired 3M’s Asian Employee Resource Network, advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in corporate philanthropy and employee engagement. As the Senior Director of Evaluation, Research, and Learning at the Minneapolis Foundation, she led initiatives to mobilize funds for racial justice and embed equity-driven strategies into organizational frameworks. She continued to share her expertise as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota and St. Catherine University, teaching public health program design, implementation, and evaluation.

Imee brings a decade of global experience providing training and technical assistance to organizations such as the Government of Tanzania’s Ministry of Health, the World Food Program, Save the Children, and CARE. Her work has supported public health initiatives addressing HIV/AIDS, maternal health, and food security. She began her career in public service, working for Congresswoman Betty McCollum in both Washington, D.C., and Saint Paul. Passionate about advancing social justice and community well-being, Imee actively volunteers in arts, education, and philanthropic leadership initiatives.

Her contributions have been recognized with honors such as the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award. She earned her Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Minnesota, where she was also a pre-doctoral candidate in adolescent health at the Healthy Youth Development Prevention Research Center. Imee is an alumna of the Harvard Young American Leaders Program.

Dr. Olusola Adegoke

Dr. Olusola Adegoke

Dr. Olusola Adegoke is a distinguished physician and public health leader with a steadfast commitment to patient-centered care and community well-being. A 2011 graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health’s Public Health Administration and Policy program, he has since built an impressive career spanning over a decade in full-spectrum family medicine and hospital medicine. His extensive clinical expertise and deep understanding of comprehensive patient care have made him a trusted provider and advocate for health equity.
Throughout his career, Dr. Adegoke has held diverse clinical roles, including hospitalist, faculty physician, and ambulatory care and obstetrics physician. Beyond direct patient care, he has actively contributed to medical research and assumed leadership positions, driving innovation, shaping healthcare policy, and advancing best practices in medicine.

Passionate about improving health outcomes and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals, Dr. Adegoke remains dedicated to excellence in patient care, medical education, and public health advocacy. His work continues to make a meaningful impact on individuals, communities, and the broader healthcare landscape.

rhonda jones-webb

Rhonda Jones-Webb, PhD

I am the Associate Director of Equity and Engagement for the Cannabis Research Center at the School of Public Health and a professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health. My research focuses on substance use epidemiology and policy with a special focus on race, social class, and neighborhood influences. I have  served as a principle investigator or co-investigator on nearly 40 externally-funded research projects and conducted studies on a variety of topics, e.g.; alcohol use in African American populations, implementation of policies related to high-alcohol-content beverages, alcohol outlet density, public policy and economic development, and cannabis use.

My current research focuses on how policies can be  implemented equitably. I am also the co-chair of  SPH’s Health Equity Work Group, a member of the Alcohol Epidemiology Program and the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity, and the faculty co-lead for CTSI/ Community Engagement to Advance Research and Community Health (CEARCH).

Damōn Chaplin

Damōn Chaplin, MBA

Damōn Chaplin currently serves as the Commissioner of the Minneapolis Health Department, where he oversees a multi-discipline staff managing multiple public health divisions responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local ordinances and codes. The department serves approximately 425,000 residents living in private and public housing units, as well as those patronizing local businesses and restaurants. 

With more than 25 years of experience in public health, Commissioner Chaplin previously served as Health Director for the City of New Bedford, Massachusetts. During his tenure, he played several key roles in advancing the city’s public health initiative:  

  • Co-chaired the Greater New Bedford Opioid Task Force.
  • One of 10 Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) designees to serve on the Opioid Recovery and Remediation Fund (ORRF) Advisory Council to the Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services. 
  • Joined the Massachusetts Health Equity Compact (HEC), which brought together over 30 Black and Latinx leaders to advocate for health equity and healthcare reform. 
  • Spearheaded the program operations for the Massachusetts Large Cities Health Coalition, consisting of the state’s 14 largest cities (populations of 70,000 or greater).

The Commissioner also serves as an Executive Committee member for the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and was recently nominated by his peers to serve as Vice President. 

He holds a master’s in business administration (MBA) from Curry College in Milton Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Central State University (CSU) in Wilberforce Ohio. He’s also a former collegiate athlete who enjoys walking, weightlifting, and dancing. He’s the proud father of four beautiful children in the Greater Boston Region. 

Commissioner Chaplin is passionate about public health, seeking leadership opportunities to share his public health story and connect people to resources and opportunities, ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to their full measure of life.
