HSRP&A MS Student Profile: Clara Godoy-Henderson

Mona Rath | April 26, 2024

“Growing up in two cultures has molded me into a culturally aware critical thinker and a community-oriented person. Even though I have lived in the U.S. for the past decade, my early childhood in community-focused Chilean culture strongly influences my thinking and actions today. I strive to embody this community orientation through action in social work, mental health, public health, and research.”

Clara Godoy-Henderson
HSRP&A MS ’24

Where did you grow up and what did you like to do?

I grew up in both Chile, and Minnesota. Growing up, I enjoyed activities such as hockey, cross country, golfing, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Where did you attend undergrad and what was your degree/area of study?

I attended St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN, where I pursued a double major in social work and public health, with a minor in nutrition.

What drew you to public health?

My interest in public health was sparked by various factors including my faith, my parents’ involvement in healthcare and non-profits, and my experiences during social work internships. These internships exposed me to systemic barriers in social services and healthcare, motivating me to develop data analysis skills to address some of these systematic issues I witnessed.

What specific issue, problem, or area of research in public health do you care the most about and why?

As a social worker and clinical research coordinator in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School, I am deeply passionate about mental health and social services, particularly in marginalized communities. There is a lot of opportunity and potential to improve interventions and services around mental health.

Why did you choose to come to the U of M School of Public Health?

Prior to the MS at the U of M, I had qualitative research experiences as a research assistant. I chose to attend the U of M School of Public Health HSRP&A program to further develop my quantitative research and data analysis skills.

What has been your favorite class so far?

One of my more challenging, but most beneficial courses has been Biostats I and II. I have found that the HSRP&A program emphasizes and teaches valuable coding skills that are highly sought-after in the field.

What is your vision for an antiracist school of public health?

My vision for an antiracist school of public health is connecting all students to various opportunities, whether in research or employment.

What do you like about living in Minnesota, and do you plan on staying here after graduation?

I love Minnesota’s abundant trails and state parks! Following graduation, I plan to attend Boston University’s Health Services and Policy Research PhD program. Although, given that most of my social support system is in MN, I hope to return to the Midwest upon graduation!
